Grassley pushes back on Democrats' criticism over Smith hearing

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley responded to Democrats who wanted Republicans to apologize for how former special counsel Jack Smith was treated at a hearing. Grassley's letter defended his record and accused Democrats of defending improper prosecutorial conduct, while Democrats sought the texts behind Sen. Eric Schmitt's questioning. Grassley declined to hand over those materials for now, citing a need to protect whistleblower sources.
Grassley, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Republican chair, answered a request from Democratic colleagues for an apology regarding Jack Smith’s hearing treatment. The dispute traces to Sen. Eric Schmitt’s suggestion that Smith had attended an Atlanta basketball game connected to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis; Smith was actually in Maryland watching the Iowa women’s team.
Democrats also sought the text messages Schmitt relied on, saying committee rules required disclosure. Grassley declined for now, saying sources needed protection from retaliation, and noted staff from both sides would meet the following week. A Durbin aide said the requested records still had not arrived.
The dispute may deepen partisan distrust in Senate Judiciary oversight and could affect how quickly documents are shared between staff. It may shape public perceptions of investigations involving former President Trump and special counsel work, potentially influencing voters who follow accountability debates. Whistleblower protections and committee transparency could also be affected if the standoff continues.
