Shaun Edwards takes Argentina defence role through 2027 World Cup
Shaun Edwards has been appointed to Argentina's coaching staff as defence coach. His contract runs until the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. He will begin working with Felipe Contepomi's team at the end of October after completing a consultancy with England's women's side.
Edwards, 59, will finish a short advisory stint with England’s women’s team before linking up with the Pumas at the end of October. Argentina have November fixtures against Ireland, Italy and France in the Nations Championship, then a 2027 World Cup pool featuring Fiji, Spain and Canada.
The former Wigan rugby league standout has coached France’s men’s defence, Wales and Wasps, collecting multiple Six Nations, domestic English and Champions Cup honours. Mario Ledesma will also join Contepomi’s staff to oversee the forwards.
The appointment may draw more attention to Argentina’s national rugby team and the Rugby Championship, potentially boosting fan interest and commercial visibility in Argentina and among rugby audiences. It could also affect England’s coaching plans and women’s team during his brief consultancy. Supporters, players, and coaches connected to Argentina, England, and France may follow how his defensive methods translate.
