Eldorado Gold's Skouries mine receives EU strategic project designation

Eldorado Gold announced that the European Commission gave its Skouries copper-gold mine Strategic Project status under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. The northern Greece mine recently started operating and represents over $2 billion in investment. Eldorado expects copper and gold output over about 20 years, supporting supply security for critical raw materials.
Eldorado Gold's Skouries operation sits in Halkidiki, northern Greece, and has just entered production. The company values the project at over US$2 billion and anticipates extracting copper and gold across a mine life of about 20 years.
The European Commission's designation links the mine to the EU's critical raw materials framework. Copper appears on that framework's strategic list, and the company says the project could create hundreds of direct jobs and broader regional economic activity.
The designation may affect European industrial supply chains by potentially improving access to copper, a metal used in electrification, renewables, and manufacturing. Local communities in northern Greece could see employment and economic benefits, though mining's environmental and social effects may also draw scrutiny. European manufacturers and energy-transition sectors may gain from a more diversified domestic source, while the actual impact depends on production levels, market conditions, and regulatory follow-through.
