Mastodon's Marrow Deep Gets Fossil-Infused Vinyl Edition

Mastodon will issue a limited vinyl version of Marrow Deep that incorporates actual mastodon fossils. The band used fossilized teeth it received about two decades ago, working with Loma Vista Recordings, Waxworks Records, and the University of Georgia's geology department. Only 170 copies will be available, with buyers chosen by lottery.
Mastodon's limited vinyl variant of Marrow Deep incorporates genuine mastodon fossils. The material came from fossilized teeth the group received roughly 20 years ago; the teeth were not considered suitable for display. Loma Vista Recordings, Waxworks Records, and the University of Georgia's geology department collaborated on the project. Band members then scattered usable fossil dust onto the records during pressing.
Only 170 copies will exist, and a drawing will decide who may buy one. The album received a strong review from Consequence. Mastodon are on the "Poisonous Weapons" tour with Deafheaven and Alcest, and John Baizley of Baroness is part of their touring lineup.
This release may appeal to music collectors, vinyl enthusiasts, and fossil fans, turning an album into a scarce artifact. The lottery approach could broaden access beyond wealthy buyers, though limited supply may still fuel resale interest. It may also draw attention to university geology departments and collaborative merchandising. For Mastodon's audience, the fossil-infused pressing could deepen engagement with the band's name and this project.
