Tornado hits western Sicily, damaging school and homes

A large tornado struck Marsala and Petrosino in western Sicily on October 9, 2026, causing damage to homes, vehicles, utilities, and a school complex. Hundreds of students were evacuated, and several people received treatment for minor injuries. The storm also downed trees and power lines, interrupted road and rail traffic, and prompted temporary housing arrangements for affected residents.
The tornado touched down around 10:00 local time, hitting Marsala, Petrosino, and Mazara del Vallo. Along Via Nazionale and the SS115, homes and structures were damaged, trees and power poles fell, parked cars overturned, and road and rail links were disrupted. Several level crossings closed.
At the Alcide De Gasperi school complex in Contrada Terrenove, frames around windows and doors were pulled away, glazing broke, and classroom supplies lay strewn about. Fire crews from Trapani province responded, with support from Palermo and Agrigento. Petrosino's waste-collection site was also hit, and temporary housing was arranged.
The disruption may weigh most on students, families, school staff, and residents near Marsala and Petrosino whose homes or vehicles were damaged. Temporary relocation and rail cancellations could complicate daily routines, work, and schooling in the short term. Minor injuries and emergency responses may add pressure on local health and fire services, while utility and transport repairs could affect broader mobility. Recovery may depend on how quickly accommodations, power, and road/rail links are restored.
