AT&T enlists OpenAI to build AI tools for its legal team

AT&T has formed a partnership with OpenAI to develop and test AI-powered tools for routine legal work. The effort expands on AT&T LegalEdge, an initiative launched in January 2026 that has already handled nearly 100 matters. The telecoms company said lawyers will remain responsible for key decisions, with confidentiality, accountability and human review kept central.
AT&T will work with OpenAI as a key design partner focused on legal work, creating and piloting AI tools for routine in-house legal tasks. The effort extends LegalEdge, launched in January 2026, which reportedly handled almost 100 matters within six months.
Planned agents may answer frequent legal questions and gather material for lawyer-prepared guidance. AT&T says confidentiality, accountability, and people remaining in the loop stay central, with lawyers retaining key decisions.
This collaboration may affect AT&T’s legal staff, clients, and counterparties by shifting routine research and information gathering to AI-assisted workflows. If implemented carefully, it could speed some internal legal support and free lawyers for complex judgment. Yet reliance on such tools may raise concerns about confidentiality, errors, and accountability, especially for employees or customers whose matters depend on accurate legal advice. The outcome likely depends on oversight and how broadly the system is deployed.
