Exploring Detroit’s East Side Through a Painter’s Eyes

Painter Dominick Lemonious offers a personal guide to Detroit’s East Side. His Push Gallery, located inside Liquor Basket Gratiot, has become a center for a newer generation of Black artists in the area. The guide also points to local spots involving vintage cars, live music, and restaurants.
Dominick Lemonious initially doubted art would be his path. After earning a business marketing degree, he helped his family run Liquor Basket Gratiot, purchased in 2020. Mentorship from Detroit muralists Hubert Massey and Henry Heading, plus involvement with the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club, helped shape his practice. He later merged painting with marketing to create Push Gallery inside the store.
A 2023 solo exhibition by photographer Elonte Davis drew wider attention from artists and curators. Nearby, Henry Harper’s Harper Galleries sits by the Belle Isle bridge and opens Thursday through Sunday. On Sundays, Gratiot Avenue can reveal vintage cars, while August brings the Woodward Dream Cruise.
This story may broaden perceptions of Detroit’s cultural map, directing visitors and local support toward East Side venues. Artists connected to Push Gallery could gain visibility and sales, while nearby businesses may see increased foot traffic. Residents might benefit from renewed attention, though tourism growth could also bring pressures such as rising costs or cultural commodification. Its impact likely depends on whether recognition remains community-driven and benefits local creators.
