Tether’s Brief USDT Blacklist Disrupted THORChain’s TRON Swaps

Tether temporarily blacklisted about 1.45 million USDT held in four THORChain vault addresses on TRON on October 9, 2026, causing swaps and liquidity-provider operations to stop. The freeze was lifted after roughly three hours, and the four addresses were released with their balances unchanged. Another 19 addresses blacklisted at the same time remained restricted, and THORChain’s co-founder said the project received no warning from Tether.
On October 9, 2026, Tether temporarily blocked about 1.45 million USDT held in four THORChain vault addresses on TRON. The token contract’s blacklist function stopped those addresses from sending USDT, though the balances stayed in place. TRON swaps and liquidity-provider activity halted almost immediately.
The restriction was reversed after roughly three hours, freeing all four vault addresses. However, 19 other addresses blacklisted at the same time stayed restricted. THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford said the project got no prior warning. THORChain uses pooled vaults to enable native cross-chain trades without wrapping assets or relying on a centralized exchange.
This episode may heighten concerns among traders and liquidity providers about stablecoin issuers’ ability to freeze assets used in decentralized finance. If similar freezes recur, users of cross-chain services could face sudden interruptions, while projects may need clearer contingency plans. It could also prompt broader discussion about how much control centralized stablecoin operators retain over on-chain liquidity, affecting confidence and risk management across crypto markets.
