Chicago Hotel Workers Walk Out Ahead of Marathon at Marriott and Hilton Properties

Hundreds of unionized hotel employees in downtown Chicago began a strike on Friday, just before the city's marathon. The walkout covers six hotels tied to Marriott, Hilton, and Millennium, and the union has warned that dozens more could join. More than 7,000 workers at 46 hotels had voted to authorize a strike, with contracts expired at most of those properties since August 31.
The walkout involves six downtown properties: three under Marriott brands, two under Hilton brands, and one Millennium hotel. Named locations include the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk and two Westin hotels. The action began Friday, two days before the Chicago Marathon.
Although over 7,000 employees across 46 hotels voted to authorize a strike, most remain at work. Contracts at 44 of those hotels ended August 31; the remaining two also operate without agreements. Local 1 President Karen Kent did not specify what would expand the strike, saying additional actions are possible and other hotels could walk out at any time.
The strike may disrupt lodging services during a major tourism weekend, affecting marathon participants, visitors, and downtown businesses that rely on hotel traffic. Guests could face reduced amenities, relocated bookings, or longer waits. Workers and their families may experience lost income and uncertainty, while the dispute could draw attention to wage and staffing debates in hospitality. If more hotels join, the impact could broaden across Chicago's tourism and convention sector.
