Kioxia reveals E1.L SSDs with up to 122.88TB for hyperscale data centers

Kioxia has introduced LD4-series E1.L SSDs aimed at hyperscale data centers, with an architecture validated for up to 122.88TB using BiCS8 3D QLC NAND. The drives are intended for read-heavy uses such as AI data repositories and object storage, and they operate at PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds with NVMe 2.0e compliance. Kioxia did not provide performance, endurance, or power-consumption figures for the new drives.
EXPANDED:
Kioxia's LD4 drives are being sampled in 15.36TB and 30.72TB versions for selected customers. The company has validated a design that can reach 122.88TB, but it has not said when that capacity will ship or when mass production will begin. The drives will be shown at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose in mid-October.
The E1.L format measures 318.75mm long, 38.4mm high, and 9.5mm thick. Its elongated board can hold many NAND packages, letting OCP-compliant server builders pack more storage into a 1U chassis without expanding rack footprint. Kioxia lists PCIe 5.0 compliance, yet the drives run PCIe 4.0 x4 at up
