Maresca rejects claims Man City titles are tainted
Enzo Maresca has dismissed the idea that Manchester City's achievements are tainted after an independent panel found the club guilty of most of the 115 Premier League financial charges. City are appealing the decision and have argued that the ruling contains significant errors. Maresca said he fully trusts the club's leadership and that his squad is concentrating on Sunday's away game against Liverpool.
Maresca took over in June as Pep Guardiola’s replacement, returning for a third stint after academy and assistant roles, including the 2022-23 Treble season. The 46-year-old has begun with five straight Premier League victories and can become the fourth manager to start a club tenure with six wins if City beat Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The independent panel’s ruling covers financial-rule breaches from 2009-10 to 2017-18 and includes findings on disguised funding exceeding £830m. City dispute the decision, citing serious legal and factual flaws, while Maresca says he trusts the owner, CEO and sporting director. Erling Haaland is available after international duty.
The outcome and appeal may shape how fans, sponsors, rival clubs and players view competitive fairness in English football. If City’s titles are later questioned or upheld, supporters could feel vindicated or alienated, while clubs may face pressure over governance and transparency. Players and managers, including Maresca, may try to keep focus on matches, but ongoing uncertainty could affect reputations, commercial relationships and public trust in the sport.
