Indian police detain thousands ahead of youth-led election protest

Indian authorities detained thousands of protesters in New Delhi as the youth-led 'Cockroach' movement tried to demonstrate against a voter list revision and the election chief. Police blocked access to Jantar Mantar, set up checkpoints, restricted mobile internet, and detained several movement leaders. The crackdown comes amid growing anger at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and follows earlier protests over exam paper leaks.
Authorities in New Delhi mounted a broad security operation on Saturday, blocking the designated Jantar Mantar protest area and stopping vehicles at entry checkpoints. Mobile internet limits and bans on small gatherings further constrained demonstrators, while police said a permit request had arrived too late.
The youth-led Cockroach movement has pressed for the election chief's resignation over a voter-list revision that critics say removed many eligible voters. Its earlier campaign against exam paper leaks led to the education minister's resignation in July, and three prominent organizers were detained after flying in from Mumbai.
The crackdown may deepen distrust among young voters and civil-society groups, especially those who see the voter-list revision as unfair. It could also raise concerns about assembly and digital access in the capital, affecting protesters, journalists, and residents. If tensions persist, opposition parties may gain momentum, while authorities could face greater scrutiny over how election administration and dissent are handled.
