Broadcom's AI Growth Ties to OpenAI and Anthropic Raise Risk Concerns

Broadcom posted strong AI semiconductor revenue in its fiscal third quarter and issued an ambitious multiyear growth forecast. The company's expansion now depends more heavily on frontier AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which have not yet demonstrated consistent profitability. Additional pressure comes from Google reducing its reliance on Broadcom and from rising competition with Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.
Broadcom's fiscal third-quarter results showed robust growth in AI semiconductor revenue, and management issued a multiyear outlook covering FY27–28 that was notably ambitious. That forecast shifts more of the company's expected expansion toward leading AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic.
Those developers have not yet demonstrated steady profits, so Broadcom's growth path carries added uncertainty. Meanwhile, Google is diversifying suppliers, which may reduce Broadcom's share, and competition with Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices is intensifying.
Investors in chipmakers and technology funds may see sharper swings if Broadcom's AI-driven forecast relies on AI developers that are not yet consistently profitable. Employees, suppliers, and customers across the semiconductor supply chain could be affected by changes in orders and competition. If demand from OpenAI and Anthropic remains strong, gains may spread; if it weakens, the pullback could weigh on retirement portfolios and broader tech valuations.
