Portugal keeps Rui Pinto under police protection

Portuguese officials confirmed that Rui Pinto, the hacker behind Football Leaks, will stay under police protection. The protection had been due to end on October 10 but remains in force pending a new decision. Pinto’s legal team had raised concerns about procedural problems and threats, including an assault in Lisbon earlier this year.
Rui Pinto, 37, has been a protected witness since 2020 after he gave Portuguese authorities access to millions of files collected before his arrest. Detained in Hungary in January 2019 and extradited to Portugal, he spent over a year in pre-trial detention before agreeing to cooperate. He also assists investigators elsewhere in Europe.
His Football Leaks disclosures, published from late 2015 with European media partners, exposed questionable conduct involving players, clubs and agents, prompting tax adjustments and judicial inquiries in several countries. In September 2023, a Portuguese court gave him a suspended four-year sentence for attempted extortion, illegal data access and correspondence breach.
The continuation of police protection may reassure whistleblowers and sources who fear retaliation, while raising questions about how Portugal handles cooperating defendants. Football authorities, clubs, journalists and fans could feel effects if Pinto’s disclosures continue to feed investigations. If his safety appears precarious, future cooperation or leaks may become less likely, potentially reducing public scrutiny of financial misconduct. Stronger safeguards, however, could encourage more people to report wrongdoing through legal channels.
