Tron Moves Quantum-Resistant Security to Testnet
Justin Sun, who founded Tron, announced that the network has activated quantum-resistant cryptography on its testnet. He indicated a mainnet rollout could happen whenever needed. The article also mentions other chains, such as Ethereum and Algorand, working on similar protections.
Justin Sun, Tron’s founder, said the network’s post-quantum cryptography is running on testnet and may be ready for mainnet deployment when required. He noted Tron is tracking quantum computing and artificial intelligence developments, with the goal of safeguarding user assets and becoming quantum-resistant before Q-Day.
Other projects are pursuing similar work. The Ethereum Foundation has proposed moving accounts to quantum-resistant cryptography, Algorand aims for quantum-resistant accounts by 2027, and a Strategy-led group pledged $15 million for Bitcoin quantum-security research. AmericanFortress also proposed wallet protections that avoid moving funds, rotating keys, or changing addresses; that proposal had not been peer-reviewed.
If quantum-resistant features reach mainnet, crypto users and institutions holding digital assets could face lower long-term risk from future quantum attacks. Exchanges, wallet providers, and developers may need to adapt infrastructure, potentially affecting costs and timelines. Broader adoption of such safeguards might strengthen confidence in blockchain networks, though the actual societal effect depends on quantum progress, implementation quality, and whether other chains follow. For now, testnet work may mainly signal preparedness rather than immediate change.
