Wirral convenience store closed for three months over illegal goods

A convenience store in Birkenhead has been ordered to close for three months after authorities found thousands of illegal cigarettes and unlicensed alcohol. The closure order was obtained by Wirral trading standards and police under anti-social behaviour legislation. The court heard that the illicit products had a potential retail value of over £10,000, and the council is now working with the landlord to remove the tenant.
Tranmere Convenience Store on Borough Road, Birkenhead, must stay shut for three months. A search at a linked address recovered 9,440 illegal cigarettes and 2.95kg of hand-rolling tobacco. During the closure visit, four alcohol bottles were found behind the counter despite no licence to sell drink.
Officers also noted an illegal cigarette packet, pre-packed food lacking required UK labels, and missing A3 tobacco age-restriction and business-name notices. The goods had an estimated street value of £3,717 and potential retail value of £10,679. Magistrates found nuisance and criminality tied to illegal tobacco supply, issuing the maximum three-month closure. Trading standards is discussing tenant removal with the landlord.
The closure may affect local shoppers who relied on the store, while nearby businesses could see changed foot traffic. Removing illegal tobacco and unlicensed alcohol might reduce access to unregulated products, especially for young people, though it could also push some purchases elsewhere. The landlord may face costs and delays in reletting. Wider confidence in trading standards and police enforcement could be strengthened if residents see visible action against repeat nuisance.
