Egyptian bank provides 100 fishing boats to Luxor fishermen in livelihood initiative

The National Bank of Egypt has handed over 100 fully equipped fishing boats to 100 fishermen in Luxor as part of the Boats of Livelihood program. The initiative, carried out with Sonaa El Khair for Development, aims to create stable incomes and economic self-reliance for the beneficiaries and their families. Luxor's governor and officials from the bank and foundation attended the delivery event.
The handover took place in Luxor with the governor, bank representatives, and foundation officials present. The boats were described as fully outfitted, including motors and fishing gear, and were given at no cost to recipients. Priority reportedly went to fishermen supporting larger households and those who did not already own a boat. The governor encouraged recipients to keep working and pass on their expertise to younger fishermen.
The program is a joint effort between the National Bank of Egypt and Sonaa El Khair for Development, which belongs to the National Alliance for Civil Development Work. Organizers said the aim is to help small-scale fishermen build steadier earnings and rely more on their own work, while also benefiting their families and communities.
The delivery may improve household stability for the 100 recipient fishermen by giving them productive assets rather than one-off aid. Their families could see more reliable income, while the local fishing economy in Luxor may benefit from increased activity and knowledge sharing. If the boats are maintained and fishing conditions allow, the initiative could support longer-term self-reliance, though its wider social impact would depend on follow-up support and market conditions.
