Unlocking and using the armor appearance system in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen adds a transmog feature called Tailoring, letting players keep one armor piece’s stats while changing its look. To unlock it, players must progress through the Reaching the Far Shore quest, defeat Fimbl, cross the frozen lake, and retrieve the Taillour-Crafte Treatise from Lakeside Grotto. Returning the treatise to Jiera and then giving it to Hal adds the Tailor equipment option to his menu.
Dark Arisen introduces Tailoring, its name for appearance customization. The system lets a chosen armor piece keep its existing attributes while displaying the look of another item the player has already obtained. It can be applied to equipped gear or inventory gear, with the latter requiring selection of the target piece.
Unlocking requires story progress. After The Castle in Ice, Reaching the Far Shore sends the player across Lake Norgan. Fimbl must be defeated in multiple encounters, including a ballista-assisted battle over the lake. Sleeping one day freezes the water around Fimbl, opening the route to Lakeside Grotto and the Taillour-Crafte Treatise. Returning it to Jiera and then Hal adds the Tailor equipment option.
This feature may appeal to players who want optimal gear without sacrificing preferred looks, especially those who customize Pawns. It could deepen engagement with loot and collection, as previously gathered armor becomes cosmetic options. For broader RPG design, such systems may reinforce expectations that appearance and performance can be separated, potentially influencing future games. Its direct societal reach may remain limited mainly to gaming audiences.
