Homebrew PS5SX2 brings PS2 disc playback and upscaling to jailbroken PS5s

A modder named Sword released PS5SX2 for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, enabling native PlayStation 2 emulation with physical disc support. The software is a port of PCSX2 that runs on the PS5's Zen 2 hardware and uses Vulkan through a custom translation layer. It supports common disc image formats and discs from all regions, and the developer says PS3 disc support may come next.
PS5SX2 is a homebrew project from modder Sword for jailbroken PS5 consoles. It adapts PCSX2's CPU recompilers to the PS5's custom Zen 2 processor, so emulation and rendering happen locally rather than being streamed from another machine. Its Vulkan renderer relies on a modified ps5vk translation layer created by Mihawk-99.
The software accepts ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO images, plus physical PS2 DVDs from any region through built-in or USB optical drives. CD-based PS2 titles are unsupported because the PS5 drive lacks a CD laser. It offers up to 6x scaling, filters including FSR, and .pnach patches for widescreen or 60 FPS. Sword has indicated PS3 disc support may follow.
For retro-game enthusiasts and preservation-minded collectors, PS5SX2 could extend the usefulness of existing PS2 discs and jailbroken hardware, reducing reliance on re-releases or PC setups. It may also strengthen the homebrew emulation community by showing that modern consoles can handle legacy disc-based software. However, because it requires a jailbroken PS5, its practical reach may remain limited to technically inclined users, and legal or warranty concerns could keep broader adoption niche.
