Sony’s New Phone Mic Records Spatial Audio, but 4K App Support Arrives Later

Sony’s ECM-AX10 is a $249.99 USB-C microphone with four omnidirectional capsules and three recording modes. It can capture Ambisonics for Eclipsa Audio on YouTube, binaural audio for headphone playback, or standard stereo. The microphone is available for US preorder, while 4K recording in Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool is planned for December 2026 and later.
Sony's ECM-AX10 is a $249.99 USB-C microphone now open for US preorders. It carries a quartet of omnidirectional capsules and three recording options: Ambisonics for Eclipsa Audio on YouTube, binaural processing for headphone playback, and ordinary stereo for general recording and video apps.
The unit weighs about 24 grams and needs iOS 18 or later or Android 14 or later. Sony publishes a list of handsets it has checked, and sound quality can vary by phone and software. Its Spatial Audio Video Tool handles filming, clip checking, light editing, and exporting, but 4K recording inside that app is planned for December 2026 or later.
Phone-based creators, travelers, and casual filmmakers could gain a more immersive way to document events, since spatial sound may make viewers feel present even on small screens. Audiences might notice richer ambience in travel clips, performances, or sports. Yet the $249.99 price, handset compatibility, and delayed 4K app support may keep adoption niche. The microphone’s impact could depend less on hardware alone and more on whether platforms, phones, and editing workflows make spatial audio easy to publish and hear.
