Early Look at Brandon Sanderson's Hoid's Storybook Collection
IGN offered hands-on impressions of Brandon Sanderson's Hoid's Storybook Collection, focusing on The Fires of December, the third book in Hoid's Travails. BackerKit supporters received digital editions in September and physical items in October. The premium hardcover is praised for its artwork, gold trim, and illustrations by Tran Nguyen, while the story is a standalone Cosmere tale narrated by Hoid.
A Storyteller-tier BackerKit backer received ebooks, PDFs, and an audiobook on Sept. 15, then physical books, stickers, and pins on Oct. 5. The Fires of December is the third Hoid's Travails book, a standalone Cosmere tale set on a new planet with December as protagonist and Hoid narrating.
The premium hardcover uses gold trim, colored text, and Tran Nguyen's illustrations; backers chose between two cover designs. Standard ebook, audiobook, and physical editions arrive later, with digital on Oct. 6 and print Dec. 8, 2026. The picture-book set adapts three Stormlight tales plus Dan Wells's original ChasmFriends story.
This release could deepen engagement among existing Cosmere readers while giving newcomers an easier entry point through standalone tales and illustrated adaptations. Families and casual fans may appreciate storybooks that make Sanderson's wider universe shareable without requiring long novels. For publishing, successful BackerKit campaigns like this may encourage more authors to pair crowdfunded premium editions with standard retail releases, potentially shifting how special-edition books, art, and audiobooks are marketed to dedicated communities.
