Zcash Sets January 2027 Target for Quantum-Resistant Signature Tools
Zcash developers plan to introduce hash-based signature opcodes in January 2027 to defend against future quantum computing threats. The first version would apply only to transparent payments and still has no confirmed network activation date. The proposal does not cover shielded transactions, though work continues on address rotation and private lookup tools.
Zakura, a group that builds and runs Zcash node software, outlined the effort in an engineering post. Engineer Roman Akhtariev said the team aims to have quantum-resistant signature opcodes ready in January. These would verify Winternitz One-Time Signature, or WOTS, signatures, an alternative to elliptic-curve methods common in wallets.
Initially, the feature would apply only to Zcash's transparent pool, where transactions are visible and resemble Bitcoin's model. ZecStats data cited in the post showed roughly 11.96 million of 16.98 million circulating ZEC sat in that pool on Oct. 8. Shielded payments are excluded, and no network activation date exists.
The proposed tools could affect Zcash users, wallet developers, exchanges, and merchants accepting ZEC. If quantum risks grow, transparent-payment users may gain an early option for stronger signatures, while shielded-transaction users may remain uncertain because that area is not covered
