Musk Pressures Ambani as Starlink Waits for India Approval

Elon Musk escalated his criticism of Mukesh Ambani, accusing the Reliance Industries chairman of blocking Starlink's entry into India. India's communications ministry rejected the allegations, saying satellite licensing rules are fair and that Starlink and other operators are at similar regulatory stages. SpaceX has distribution agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel but still lacks approval for commercial service in the country.
Musk has repeatedly attacked Ambani online, suggesting the Reliance chief holds excessive sway over New Delhi and is preventing Starlink from competing. India's communications ministry countered that its satellite licensing process treats operators equally and that Starlink is not being singled out.
Starlink has distribution pacts with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, yet commercial service still awaits approval. Security reviews must finish before satellite spectrum is assigned. Jio and Airtel are also pursuing satellite internet, through SES and Eutelsat OneWeb respectively. India's vast internet market makes it strategically important for Musk.
If Starlink enters India, remote communities could gain another broadband option, potentially helping students and small businesses. Existing telecom and satellite providers may face added competition, which could influence pricing and service quality. Regulatory delays may keep those benefits uncertain. The Musk-Ambani dispute could also shape public discussion about market concentration and foreign participation, though actual effects depend on approvals and security clearances.
