Bitfinex margin traders pile into Ethereum longs at four-year high

Margin traders on Bitfinex held roughly 283,410 ETH in long positions on October 11, 2026, marking the platform's largest bullish exposure in over four years. Longs outweighed shorts by about 80 to 1, with short positions down to approximately 3,530 ETH. The buildup came after a volatile stretch for Ethereum and a sharp reversal from late September, when shorts had reached a four-year high.
Bitfinex margin accounts held about 283,410 ETH in bullish positions on Oct. 11, 2026, valued near $709 million. That was the exchange’s biggest long exposure in at least four years. The total had risen from roughly 82,500 ETH in late August, including a 157% weekly increase, and sat just under the 90-day high of 283,598 ETH from Oct. 8.
Bearish bets had shrunk to about 3,530 ETH, worth roughly $8.8 million, leaving an 80-to-1 long-to-short split. This marked a reversal from late September, when short positions hit a four-year peak between 73,000 and 101,000 ETH. ETH changed hands near $2,500 as the positions built, following a choppy stretch that included a pullback.
Heavy leveraged positioning on one exchange may matter mainly to crypto traders, lenders, and platforms exposed to forced liquidations. If ETH falls, long holders could face margin calls, amplifying sell pressure and losses; if it rises, remaining shorts could exit quickly. Retail observers may see sharper price swings, while Bitfinex’s order book could influence broader sentiment. The episode may also renew attention on leverage risks and risk controls in crypto markets.
