Bitwise CIO Sees Bitcoin Potentially Matching Gold’s Market Value

Matt Hougan, Bitwise’s chief investment officer, argues Bitcoin could eventually reach a market capitalization of about $30 trillion, similar to gold’s. That would imply a theoretical price near $1.5 million per BTC, though he frames it as a long-term comparison rather than a near-term forecast. The article says spot Bitcoin ETFs could broaden institutional access, while Bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap may support demand.
Matt Hougan, Bitwise’s CIO, bases his comparison on gold’s ETF-era growth. When SPDR Gold Shares launched in 2004, gold’s market value was about $2.5 trillion; it later approached $30 trillion. Bitcoin spot ETFs began trading in the U.S. in January 2024, when BTC’s market was near $1 trillion and later briefly exceeded $2 trillion.
At the time of Hougan’s remarks, Bitcoin traded around $83,000, giving a market value near $1.65 trillion. A $30 trillion valuation would require roughly an 18-fold increase and imply about $1.5 million per coin, based on nearly 20 million circulating BTC. Hougan set no date and called it a long-term comparison.
If such long-term comparisons gain traction, they could influence how institutions, financial advisers, and ordinary savers view Bitcoin’s role in portfolios. Broader ETF access may make crypto exposure easier, potentially drawing more mainstream capital but also exposing less-experienced investors to sharp volatility. The debate may also shape regulatory and public discussions about digital assets, though any $1.5 million price outcome remains speculative and far from guaranteed.
