Utilities ETF Rebounds From 52-Week Low as Sector Shows Bottoming Signs

The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund fell to a 52-week low near $39 amid rising Treasury yields but has since recovered almost 5% to trade above $41. NextEra Energy, the fund’s largest holding, has a Moderate Buy rating and about 28% implied upside. Southern Company, the second-largest holding, offers a 3.5% dividend yield, a low beta of 0.31, and roughly 16% implied upside.
The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund touched a 52-week low around $39 as Treasury yields rose, then climbed nearly 5% to above $41. That low is now a key support level; a move above its 20-day average and a higher low would help confirm a reversal.
NextEra Energy is XLU's biggest position at almost 13%. It yields 3.2%, is down about 4% year to date and over 20% from its high, and carries a Moderate Buy consensus with roughly 28% implied upside. Southern, the second-largest holding, yields 3.5%, has a 0.31 beta, and offers about 16% implied upside.
A utilities rebound could matter to income-focused investors, retirees, and savers who hold sector funds or utility shares. If Treasury yields settle, dividend-paying equities may regain some appeal, potentially helping portfolios. Yet utilities' heavy borrowing needs mean rate moves may still influence costs and valuations, with effects felt unevenly across households and long-term investors.
