Three Die as Ship Burns on Lake Nyasa in Tanzania

The MV Chambo caught fire on Lake Nyasa in southern Tanzania on 11 October, killing three of 44 passengers. More than 40 people were rescued with help from local residents and fishermen, and the dead were taken to Nangombo District Hospital. The vessel was traveling from Tanzania to Mozambique with passengers from Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi and Lesotho; the cause remains unknown.
The MV Chambo was carrying 44 people and roughly 10 tonnes of cargo from Tanzania to Mozambique when it caught fire in Tanzanian waters off Nyasa District, Ruvuma Region. Those aboard came from Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi and Lesotho. Three passengers died: a Mozambican girl, a Malawian woman and a Tanzanian man from Njombe Region. More than 40 others were rescued with help from local residents and fishermen, and the dead were taken to Nangombo District Hospital. Investigators have not established the cause.
Lake Nyasa, known as Lake Malawi in Malawi, is shared by Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique. Small vessels serve as important cross-border links for passengers and goods between lakeside communities. Tanzania and Malawi have a longstanding border disagreement on the lake, though officials have not connected Sunday’s fire to that dispute.
