Liquid Network still cannot process bitcoin redemptions after reserve shortfall

Liquid Network's bitcoin redemptions remained suspended on October 11, 2026, 35 days after an exploit drained reserves. Explorer data showed federation reserves of 3,632.23 BTC against 4,234.76 L-BTC in circulation, leaving a shortfall of about 602.53 BTC. Transfers resumed on September 10, 2026, but peg-outs will require full backing, software updates, and completed security reviews.
Liquid, a Bitcoin sidechain, lets users lock BTC with a federation and receive L-BTC meant to trade one-for-one. After a September 6, 2026 exploit, an Elements proof-cache flaw let an invalid transaction mint about 4,000 unbacked tokens, which were swapped out through SideSwap.
By October 11, 2026, explorer figures showed 3,632.23 BTC backing 4,234.76 L-BTC, a 602.53 BTC gap. Transfers restarted September 10, but peg-outs stayed closed pending full reserves, v23.3.4 safeguards, external audit, and key changes. About 3,400 BTC was returned; recovery continued without ransom.
L-BTC holders, exchanges, merchants, and issuers of assets on Liquid may face continued uncertainty while redemptions stay closed. If confidence weakens, users could move toward more transparent or native Bitcoin custody, and projects may reassess reliance on federated sidechains. The episode may also push exchanges and wallet providers to demand clearer reserve reporting and independent audits, though the network’s resumed transfers and partial recovery could limit broader market spillovers.
