Gemini's map tool lets users point to locations instead of describing them

Gemini introduced a Map tool around Oct. 2 that opens a live Google Maps view inside the app. Users access it through the plus menu, then can drag, zoom, search, or return to their current location. The author says pointing at a place on the map removes much of the guesswork from location searches.
Gemini's Map tool appeared for users around Oct. 2. It opens a live Google Maps view inside the app, reached through the plus button beside the chat field. After choosing Map, users see a circle around their current location and can drag, zoom, search, or return to their position. Tapping "Explore this area" adds a Map Area chip to the prompt.
It is only on Android and iPhone apps, not web or desktop. In Park Slope, Brooklyn, the author found coffee shops inside the circle with ratings, prices, and hours. Results could be sorted by walking time from the circle's center, though one less-mapped area yielded a suggestion outside it.
This tool may make location-based questions easier for people who struggle to describe places, including travelers, newcomers, and users with language or memory barriers. By letting them point to an area, it could reduce trial-and-error in search and make local recommendations more spatially precise. However, reliance on map boundaries and coverage gaps may shape which businesses or neighborhoods get surfaced, potentially affecting small or less-mapped areas.
