The Tattoo Artist Behind Carmy’s Ink on The Bear

Benny Shields is the Los Angeles tattoo artist who created onscreen body art for The Bear, including designs for Carmy and Luca. He worked closely with Jeremy Allen White to develop Carmy’s tattoos as part of the character’s backstory. Shields also has credits with Ryan Gosling and has seen The Bear-inspired tattoos become popular with fans.
Benny Shields, 44, is an L.A.-based tattooer whose first film credit came through Ryan Gosling on The Place Beyond the Pines; the connection ran through Shields’s brother Zach, then a member of Gosling’s band Dead Man’s Bones. Shields also worked on The Bear, creating body art for Carmy and Luca.
For Carmy, Shields and Jeremy Allen White, a longtime friend and prior client, discussed family and feelings of inspiration or safety, then translated those talks into sketches. White suggested the Pyrex measuring cup with a globe on Carmy’s left forearm, one of 15 approved designs. Shields later contributed hand-poked-style tattoos to Alien: Romulus.
This story may deepen public interest in how tattoos help build fictional characters, potentially raising demand for artists who consult on film and TV. Fans of The Bear could seek similar fine-line, black-and-white designs, while tattooers may see more clients asking for narrative-driven pieces. It could also encourage productions to treat body art as part of character development, affecting actors, designers, and viewers who read tattoos as storytelling cues.
