Magic's 2027 Sets Will Bring a Minimum of 24 Commander Precons

Mark Rosewater has stated that each of Magic: The Gathering's six 2027 sets will include at least four Commander preconstructed decks. That guarantees no fewer than 24 new precons next year. The article notes that 2026 is expected to have around 25 unique Commander decks, though some releases faced shipping delays and supply shortages.
Rosewater's Tumblr answer sets a floor, not a final count: six 2027 sets with four decks each means 24 Commander precons at minimum. By contrast, 2026's seven sets produced 17 decks, with only Secrets of Strixhaven, Marvel Super Heroes, and Star Trek reaching four or more.
2026 also saw supply problems, including delays for Marvel and Foundations products. Foundations supplied five decks and Secret Lair three, while a Spider-Man deck is rumored for December. Collector's editions are excluded from unique counts because they only change foiling. Marvel Darkhold Destiny has four decks revealed; Nauctis, arriving earlier, has none shown yet.
More Commander precons could make casual play more accessible, giving newcomers ready-made options and helping local game stores host events. Yet a larger annual lineup may also strain players' budgets and shelf space, while repeated supply shortages could frustrate those seeking specific decks. Collectors and secondary-market sellers may see shifting demand, and tournament organizers might need to adapt to a wider card pool. The overall social effect likely depends on whether Wizards can match production and distribution to the format's growing audience.
