Seoul reports North Korean ballistic missile launches into eastern waters

South Korea's military said it detected several ballistic missiles fired from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea on Monday. Japan's defense ministry also confirmed at least one suspected ballistic missile launch. The launches come amid heightened tensions over a DMZ landmine blast that injured three South Korean soldiers last month.
Seoul’s military said it tracked several ballistic missiles around 09:20 local time from the Pyongyang region toward the East Sea, also called the Sea of Japan. Japan’s defense ministry reported at least one suspected ballistic launch. The launches followed rising friction after two DMZ landmines wounded three South Korean soldiers last month.
A Seoul-UN probe attributed the mines to North Korea, which denied involvement. Pyongyang later tested a missile it said used artificial intelligence, while Seoul announced a successful homegrown hypersonic glide vehicle test. The Korean conflict closed in 1953 under an armistice rather than a formal peace accord.
Residents near border and coastal areas in South Korea and Japan may feel heightened anxiety. Regional travel, shipping, and markets could face brief uncertainty. Public debate over defense and deterrence may intensify. The extent depends on whether launches continue and whether diplomacy resumes.
