Skyscanner's Largest User Base Is India, With International Searches Approaching Half of All Queries

India has become Skyscanner's largest market by users, with search volume there increasing 22% year over year, faster than the global rate of 17%. The proportion of searches directed to international trips has risen to 48%, nearly matching the 52% for domestic travel, compared with a roughly 80-20 domestic-international split three years earlier. A company expert attributed the change to greater travel interest and a focus on value, while noting Indian travelers often search closer to departure than many other markets.
Skyscanner now counts India as its biggest user market. Searches originating there grew 22% year over year, compared with 17% worldwide. The mix has shifted sharply: international queries account for 48%, while domestic ones make up 52%. Three years ago, the split was about 80% domestic and 20% international.
Neel Ghose, a Skyscanner India travel trends and destinations expert, linked the shift to stronger travel intent and a desire to get better value. He also noted that Indian travelers tend to search nearer to departure than those in many other markets. The company has sought to draw travelers making their first international trip, and shared the findings in Delhi alongside its Travel Trends 2027 report.
The shift may affect Indian households, travel businesses, and destination economies. As more Indians consider international trips, airlines, agencies, and foreign tourism boards could see new demand, while domestic operators may face more competition. Value-focused, later search behavior may push companies to offer clearer pricing and flexible booking options. It could also broaden cultural exposure for travelers, though affordability and visa access may shape who participates.
