Telia targets SEK 1bn savings with 900-position reduction

Telia plans to remove about 900 positions as part of a restructuring intended to lower costs and simplify operations. The company is aiming for annual gross savings of SEK 1 billion, with cuts affecting employees and external consultants, while around 220 roles are expected to move to country operations. The changes are slated for completion by December 31, 2026, subject to union negotiations, and Telia expects restructuring charges of roughly SEK 600 million in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Telia intends to remove roughly 900 roles across the group, covering staff and outside consultants. About 220 positions, largely from the central Technology unit, would shift into country operations. The company seeks yearly gross savings of SEK 1 billion and expects the program to finish by 31 December 2026, pending union talks.
Telia also anticipates about SEK 600 million in restructuring charges in Q4 2026, with most cash effects arriving in 2027. CEO Patrik Hofbauer described the move as part of building a future Telia, emphasizing greater local empowerment, a simpler and faster organization, and continued customer investment.
The restructuring could affect hundreds of employees and contractors, especially central technology roles, while shifting some work closer to country markets. If savings are reinvested, customers may see continued network and service investment; if not, service quality or innovation could face pressure. Local labor markets and unions may also feel effects as consultations proceed. Broader telecom sector may watch whether this model improves competitiveness without weakening resilience.
