Tradeweb reports strong September ETF trading in Europe and the U.S.

Tradeweb's European ETF marketplace recorded EUR 69 billion in September trading volume, the second-highest level for that month. Six of the ten most actively traded European ETFs were equity-based, while two gold ETCs and two short-dated fixed income funds made up the rest. U.S. ETF notional trading reached USD 122 billion, up 52% year-over-year, with six of the top ten U.S. ETFs being fixed-income-based.
Tradeweb’s European ETF venue recorded EUR 69 billion in September, the second-largest monthly total for that month. Equity products made up six of the ten busiest European ETFs, while gold ETCs and short-dated fixed income funds each accounted for two.
On the U.S. side, notional ETF trading reached USD 122 billion, 52% above the prior-year level. Fixed income represented six of the ten most active U.S. ETFs, compared with eight in August and four in July. The figures come from Tradeweb’s institutional European- and U.S.-listed ETF platforms.
Higher ETF trading volumes may deepen liquidity and could narrow spreads, potentially lowering costs for institutional and retail investors. The shift toward fixed-income ETFs might give savers and advisers more ways to manage rate risk, though heavy concentration in a few funds could amplify market moves if flows reverse. Market operators and issuers may benefit from greater activity, while regulators could watch for stability risks.
