Zee 5 Global has released a trailer for Sumo Didi ahead of its streaming launch. The Indian sports biopic, which had a theatrical release in 2023, centers on Hetal Dave, described as India's first professional female sumo wrestler. Directed by Jayant Rohatgi and starring Shriyam Bhagnani, the film premieres on Zee 5 Global on October 23.
Sumo Didi is an Indian sports biopic backed by Jio Studios, Fresh Lime Films and MA+TH Entertainment Networks. It first appeared in cinemas in 2023 before moving to a streaming platform.
The film focuses on Hetal Dave, described as India’s first professional female sumo wrestler. Jayant Rohatgi directs, with Shriyam Bhagnani in the lead and Chaitnya Sharma also starring. Zee 5 Global will debut it exclusively on October 23.
The streaming release could bring Hetal Dave’s story to viewers beyond those who saw it theatrically, potentially increasing awareness of women in nontraditional sports. Aspiring athletes and fans of Indian sports dramas may find inspiration in the subject’s path. It may also give the filmmakers and cast a wider audience, while contributing to ongoing demand for female-led sports narratives on streaming platforms.
