LineageOS 24 stable builds arrive with Android 17 and easier flashing

The LineageOS project has published the first stable LineageOS 24 builds based on Android 17 for multiple devices. This release includes security patches through October 2026 and a browser-based installation tool intended to simplify flashing. It also refreshes core apps with Material Design 3 Expressive, adds streaming updates for A/B devices, and introduces the Canvas image editor.
LineageOS 24 stable packages Android 17 with security fixes from August 2025 through October 2026. Its WebUSB Flash Tools let browsers communicate directly with compatible hardware via ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, or Samsung Odin, while device-specific wiki guides remain the default supported route. Initial hardware spans Pixel 4 and 4a through Pixel 10 models, plus OnePlus 13 and Fairphone 5.
Core apps received a Material Design 3 Expressive refresh, including Updater and Setup Wizard. Updater streams updates by default on A/B devices; non-A/B hardware updates recovery on first boot. Canvas adds cropping, white balance, and filters, complementing Glimpse and Aperture. LineageOS 22.2 support stays limited to Linux kernels 4.4 and 4.9 until Android 15 bulletins cease.
Stable LineageOS 24 may extend the usable life of older Android phones, helping budget-conscious users and tinkerers keep security patches longer. Browser-based flashing could lower barriers for less technical users, though compatibility and USB/browser limits may still exclude some. The refreshed apps and streaming updates could make daily use smoother. This might reduce e-waste indirectly, but only for supported models and users comfortable with custom ROMs.
