GSK Plans Major Pennsylvania Expansion for Biologics Manufacturing

GSK will invest more than $800 million to build a hub for innovation and manufacturing in Upper Merion, Pennsylvania. Starting next year, the company intends to tear down existing structures and add a biologics production site, a research and development pilot plant, a quality control laboratory, and a manufacturing science and technology center. Pennsylvania officials expect the project to create over 300 jobs within five years while GSK keeps roughly 4,500 full-time employees in the state.
GSK's Upper Merion site already hosts drug discovery and development work, and construction will begin with demolition of current buildings next year. The project adds a biologics production plant, an R&D pilot facility, a quality control laboratory, and a manufacturing science and technology center.
It follows a $1.2 billion plan announced 13 months earlier that included a flexible biologics factory there, plus an $800 million Marietta campus expansion two years ago. The new work qualifies for Pennsylvania manufacturing tax benefits. Meanwhile, GSK has handed facilities in China, Singapore and Maryland to partners, closed a U.K. antibiotic plant, and ended manufacturing in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
New biologics capacity and pilot-scale research in Pennsylvania could shorten the path from laboratory work to commercial supply, potentially benefiting patients awaiting respiratory and cancer medicines. The promised 300-plus roles may bolster the regional life-sciences workforce, though hiring timelines and automation could temper those gains. For GSK, concentrating investment in one state while divesting plants elsewhere may simplify operations but leaves surrounding communities dependent on a single company's long-term strategy.
