Tim Cook Makes Third China Trip of 2026 as Executive Chairman

Tim Cook is making his third visit to China this year, his first since becoming Apple's executive chairman. He met with Guangdong governor Meng Fanli to discuss expanding local manufacturing, sales channels, smart manufacturing, and research and development. The visit follows strong early sales for the iPhone 18 Pro models, which reportedly sold 12% more units in their first three days than their predecessors did in the full first week last year.
Tim Cook’s current stop in Guangdong marks his third China visit of 2026 and his first since shifting from CEO to executive chairman on September 1, when John Ternus became chief executive. His agenda included talks with provincial governor Meng Fanli about local manufacturing, sales, smart production, and R&D.
The trip follows strong early demand for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Counterpoint Research ranked Apple first in China’s smartphone sales for September 14–20, and the new Pro models reportedly moved 12% more units in China during their first three days than last year’s equivalents did across their opening week.
Cook’s visit may reinforce Apple’s ties with Chinese suppliers and regional officials, potentially affecting factory workers, local partners, and consumers awaiting new devices. Strong iPhone 18 Pro sales could shape competitive pressure on rival smartphone makers and influence retail and manufacturing employment in Guangdong. Because Apple operates globally, any expansion or policy shift could also ripple through app developers, accessory makers, and investors, though outcomes remain uncertain.
