Microsoft puts Word, Excel, and PowerPoint inside Copilot app

Microsoft's Copilot app now allows users to open, edit, and share Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly. The update adds a Library section and keeps collaboration features like comments and reviews within Copilot. This shift makes Copilot a central workspace rather than just an AI add-on to Office apps.
Microsoft has reversed its earlier approach: instead of embedding Copilot into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, it is placing those document tools inside Copilot itself. The app now supports opening, editing, and sharing files, with a Library area that keeps documents within reach in one interface.
Collaboration features such as comments and review remain available inside Copilot. The unified experience is initially limited to Frontier users in Chat and Cowork, suggesting a staged rollout. Microsoft frames this as part of a broader effort to make Copilot a central work environment.
For office workers and teams, this could mean fewer app switches and faster document creation, as AI and editing live together. It may also make Copilot a more central daily tool, potentially increasing dependence on Microsoft's ecosystem. Organizations adopting it early could see collaboration patterns shift, while others may wait for broader availability. The impact on job roles and digital skills may be gradual rather than immediate.
