Ojai’s El Roblar Hotel Reopens with Artistic, Bohemian Flair

El Roblar, a 1919 Spanish Revival building in Ojai, has reopened as a 50-room hotel after being mostly closed to the public for about 50 years. The project involves Eric Goode, Studio Shamshiri, Warner Ebbink, and Jeremy McBride, who restored details from original 1919 drawings. Located on Ojai’s walkable main street, it sits near independent shops, Rory’s Place, and the Ojai Playhouse.
El Roblar occupies a 1919 Spanish Revival building in Ojai. It has returned as a 50-room hotel after being largely off-limits for about 50 years. The team includes Eric Goode, Ramin Shamshiri, restaurateur Warner Ebbink, and filmmaker Jeremy McBride. They used original 1919 drawings to guide restoration of features such as the entry arch and stone fireplace.
Inside, more than 1,000 art and antique pieces were gathered, many from local estate sales and dealers. Walls display Western landscapes, wildlife studies, and curiosities, plus condor-themed items for the restaurant. An informal Ojai Hall of Fame honors Yvon Chouinard, Rick Ridgeway, and Diane Ladd. Nearby are Rory’s Place, Rory’s Other Place, and the 1914 Ojai Playhouse.
El Roblar’s reopening could bring more foot traffic to Ojai’s walkable center, potentially benefiting independent shops, nearby restaurants, the Playhouse, and hospitality workers. It may also strengthen local pride in preserving a century-old landmark. At the same time, increased visitor interest could add pressure on parking, housing, and daily life for residents, though the hotel’s small scale and artistic focus may keep effects gradual.
