Hyundai, TVS Collaborate on Electric Three-Wheeler for Indian Roads

Hyundai Motor and TVS Motor have signed a joint development agreement to create an electric three-wheeler for India, internally called U834. The vehicle is expected to launch in late 2027 or early 2028, with TVS planning to produce 3,000 to 4,000 units per month at its Hosur plant. The design focuses on safety, cabin comfort, accessibility, and adjustable ground clearance for Indian road conditions.
The Hyundai-TVS effort formalized through an April 20, 2026 joint development agreement. Hyundai is handling design, while TVS supplies its EV platform, local engineering, manufacturing, and retail reach. The partners intend to source key components in India and complete testing and certification.
The U834 concept appeared at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025, alongside a micro four-wheeler study. Planned features included adjustable ground clearance, a foldable seat for wheelchair access, climate control, and uses such as passenger transport, deliveries, and emergency response. Production is targeted at TVS's Hosur, Tamil Nadu plant, with a reported 3,000–4,000 monthly units across two versions.
If launched, this vehicle could affect auto-rickshaw drivers, passengers, and small logistics operators by offering an electric option with safety and accessibility features. Wheelchair users may gain more travel choices if the foldable-seat concept reaches production. Local manufacturing at Hosur could support jobs and supplier activity, while broader adoption may depend on pricing, charging access, and final specifications. The project may also intensify competition in India's three-wheeler EV segment.
