Teradyne Debuts Compact UltraFLEXplus S Tester for Edge AI Chips
Teradyne launched the UltraFLEXplus S series, a test platform aimed at edge AI chip production with high product mix and variable volumes. The first model, UltraFLEXplus S24, is a 24-slot system designed to reduce floor-space and facilities costs while retaining test capabilities. It shares instrument modules, IG-XL software, and test program libraries with the UltraFLEXplus Q series, allowing customers to reuse engineering work.
Teradyne added the UltraFLEXplus S series to its UltraFLEXplus family, aiming at edge AI production where chip mixes vary and volumes fluctuate. The first model, S24, offers 24 slots and serves engineering and production testing. It is a single-module alternative to the four-module Q series.
The S series retains the Q series’ test instruments, IG-XL environment, and program libraries, letting customers reuse prior engineering work. Teradyne says it handles tri-temperature testing and covers MCUs, multimedia, and edge AI chips for automotive, industrial, and consumer markets. It seeks better floor-space efficiency and equipment utilization for IDMs and OSATs.
The launch may help chipmakers and test providers fit more testing into smaller facilities, potentially lowering costs for edge AI components used in cars, factories, and consumer devices. If it shortens test development and improves utilization, smaller firms could access advanced testing more easily. However, benefits depend on adoption and actual production economics; workers and regions tied to semiconductor manufacturing could see gradual shifts in demand for floor space and engineering skills.
