CME Corn Futures Hit Daily Volume Record Following USDA Report

CME Group said corn futures traded a record 1,206,376 contracts on Oct. 9, 2026, topping the prior high of 1,128,597 from March 29, 2019. The exchange tied the activity to a USDA report that showed ending stocks, yields, and production above market expectations. Third-quarter corn futures average daily volume rose 35.2% year over year to 502,004 contracts, while corn options averaged 179,674 contracts daily, up 31.4%.
CME Group reported that corn futures changed hands 1,206,376 times on Oct. 9, 2026, exceeding the 1,128,597-contract high from March 29, 2019. The exchange attributed the surge to a USDA update whose ending stocks, yield, and production figures came in above what the market had anticipated.
The record came amid broader gains in agricultural trading. CME's agriculture segment averaged 2,022,488 contracts a day in Q3, up 18.1% from a year earlier, while September's ADV reached 1,936,761, up 28.8%. Corn futures Q3 ADV was 502,004 (+35.2%), and corn options averaged 179,674 (+31.4%).
The record activity may matter beyond traders. Farmers, grain elevators, food manufacturers, and exporters could use deeper corn futures and options markets to hedge price risk, potentially improving liquidity and price discovery. If the USDA's larger supply outlook feeds through, input and food costs might ease for some businesses, though weather, demand, and policy could offset that. Consumers may see indirect effects, but the link is uncertain.
