Colt to broaden global fibre footprint in response to AI connectivity demand

Colt has announced further investment in its global network to meet rising connectivity needs tied to AI. The expansion covers North America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, with fibre upgrades and broader reach in several European cities. Colt also plans capacity for speeds up to 400Gb, new US and subsea routes, a Johannesburg point of presence, a 600km Japanese fibre route, and metropolitan expansion in cities including Warsaw, Bordeaux, Zaragoza, Berlin and Frankfurt.
Colt’s investment targets several regions at once: North America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, plus European metro and long-haul links. The company intends to raise capacity to 400Gb, add US coast-to-coast and subsea routes, and open a Johannesburg point of presence. In the Middle East, it is widening connectivity in Dubai and Türkiye.
In Japan, Colt is constructing an Osaka–Fukuoka fibre path exceeding 600km, with further western Japan expansion planned. European metro builds in Warsaw, Bordeaux, Zaragoza, Berlin and Frankfurt will lift its metropolitan network count to 55. Colt is also upgrading the Marseille–Milan link.
The build-out could affect businesses, cloud and AI developers, data-centre operators, and consumers in the covered regions. Faster, higher-capacity links may improve access to AI services and support digital activity in expanded metro areas. Benefits may cluster around connected hubs, while smaller or unserved markets could see less immediate change. The wider effect may depend on how quickly capacity reaches users and whether competition turns infrastructure gains into broader service improvements.
