Haverford College Cancels Oct. 7 Pro-Palestine Event; Student Group Blames Zionist Actors
Haverford College canceled a pro-Palestine event that had been scheduled for October 7. The campus Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter blamed 'Zionist' actors for the cancellation. Organizers had been asked to move the event to another date but refused.
Haverford College in Pennsylvania called off a pro-Palestinian art event set for Oct. 7. The campus Young Democratic Socialists of America had organized the gathering, titled “Art Campaign in Solidarity with Palestine,” to mark what organizers described as three years since an escalation of violence against Palestinians.
President Wendy Raymond said the event was allowed under school rules but that its date was hurtful and conflicted with inclusion goals. Administrators asked organizers to choose another day; they refused. Raymond then cited safety concerns, canceled it, and offered to help reschedule. The college also opened a reflection space from Oct. 7 to 9. YDSA and Philadelphia DSA blamed “Zionist” campus and outside actors.
The cancellation may deepen campus divisions over Israel-Palestine discourse, affecting Jewish and Palestinian students, student organizers, and administrators. Some may see the decision as a needed safety measure; others may view it as suppressing political expression. The dispute could influence how colleges handle controversial events on sensitive anniversaries, potentially prompting clearer scheduling and security policies. It may also intensify debates about antisemitism and political speech on campuses.
