Sunil Bharti Mittal Receives France’s Legion of Honour

Sunil Bharti Mittal, the founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has received France’s Legion of Honour from President Emmanuel Macron. The award highlights his work in telecommunications and digital infrastructure, along with his efforts to deepen economic ties between India and France. Bharti’s business relationship with France dates back to 1992.
The honour, France’s highest national merit award created by Napoleon in 1802, was conferred by President Macron. Mittal is also co-chair of Eutelsat, a satellite communications firm. The formal ceremony is set for 28 October 2026 in New Delhi.
His links with France stretch to 1992, when Compagnie Générale des Eaux, through SFR, joined the consortium that helped launch cellular services in India. Later partnerships included Alcatel-Lucent and AXA, spanning telecom and financial services. Mittal received India’s Padma Bhushan in 2007 and an honorary British knighthood in 2024.
The recognition may strengthen perceptions of Indian telecom leadership in global digital infrastructure conversations. It could encourage more cross-border partnerships, potentially affecting operators, satellite players, suppliers, and consumers through investment and technology exchange. For Indian and French businesses, the visibility may open doors to collaboration in connectivity and financial services. The societal effect may be indirect: better diplomatic and commercial ties could influence network investment, service innovation, and digital access, though outcomes depend on execution and market conditions.
