VCOM and Butterfly Network Partner on Ultrasound Training Program

VCOM and Butterfly Network announced a long-term alliance and joint investment to make VCOM a center of excellence for ultrasound education and community care. The program will give each student a Butterfly ultrasound probe and integrate device training into the curriculum. The organizations described it as a first-of-its-kind model.
The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Butterfly Network have formed a long-term partnership with shared funding. Their goal is to position VCOM and its learners as a hub for ultrasound teaching and community service.
Under the plan, every student receives a Butterfly handheld ultrasound probe. Training with the device becomes part of the curriculum. Butterfly focuses on ultrasound devices built with semiconductors, along with cloud software and artificial intelligence. The organizations call the arrangement a model unlike prior efforts. The announcement came from Burlington, Massachusetts, and Blacksburg, Virginia.
This collaboration may broaden early exposure to point-of-care ultrasound for osteopathic medical students, potentially improving their confidence and skills before clinical practice. Patients in community settings could benefit if trainees and future physicians use portable imaging more routinely, though access, training quality, and appropriate use will shape outcomes. The model may also encourage other schools and device makers to consider similar curriculum-wide deployments, affecting educators, clinicians, and health technology companies.
