S&P DJI and Kaiko complete first fully onchain OTC derivatives trade

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Kaiko executed what they call the first over-the-counter derivative swap conducted entirely onchain, using the Canton Network. The total return swap referenced a tokenized version of S&P DJI's iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, with DRW and Marex as counterparties through the Derivnex platform. Kaiko embedded index data and permissions into the tokenized index, allowing the trade to use synchronized records while meeting S&P DJI's licensing requirements.
The transaction was a total return swap, so one counterparty gained exposure to the bond index’s performance without holding the underlying debt, while the other accepted the opposite side. DRW and Marex traded through Derivnex, an OTC derivatives venue on Canton Network. Kaiko placed index values and usage permissions inside the tokenized benchmark, letting both firms rely on matching records for valuations and lifecycle events.
S&P DJI had already entered digital markets in March 2026 by licensing the S&P 500 for perpetual contracts on Hyperliquid. Canton’s design supports institutions that need shared recordkeeping without making every position public, which fits private bilateral agreements.
This may mainly affect institutional finance: fund managers, brokers, and index providers could see faster settlement and less reconciliation, potentially lowering some costs passed to investors. If licensing rules remain enforceable onchain, more benchmark data may move to shared ledgers, changing how market data is accessed and audited. Broader public impact is uncertain; benefits may depend on transparency, governance, and whether efficiencies reach retail investors.
