American Airlines to Install Starlink Across All Mainline Jets

American Airlines intends to install Starlink across all of its mainline jets, a group exceeding 1,000 Airbus and Boeing aircraft in narrow- and wide-body categories. The rollout is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and broadens a prior commitment covering more than 500 Airbus planes. According to the carrier, the equipment supports speeds as high as 1 Gbps, enabling passengers to remain online throughout a trip for work, entertainment, and web use.
American’s plan covers its whole mainline fleet, not just the Airbus jets named in its earlier May commitment. The carrier says the expanded effort will reach over 1,000 Airbus and Boeing narrowbody and widebody planes, with work starting in early 2027.
The airline’s mainline operation carries more than 165 million travelers yearly across four aircraft families. Its current mainline count exceeds 1,030 aircraft: over 500 Airbus narrowbodies, over 400 Boeing narrowbodies, and over 130 Boeing widebodies. American also expects more than 300 additional mainline deliveries in the years ahead.
This rollout could affect millions of American passengers, given more than 165 million fly its mainline aircraft yearly. If delivered as planned, it may make working, messaging, streaming, and browsing easier during flights. Business travelers and families could benefit most. It may also raise expectations for reliable inflight Wi-Fi across the airline industry, though actual experience will depend on installation pace and network performance.
